Triathlon Canada Nation Ready to Celebrate Country’s 150th Birthday with National Championships, CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon Race in Ottawa

Registration remains open at www.ottawatriathlon.ca to compete in historic Canadian Championships.

OTTAWA–In just three weeks the Triathlon Canada Nation will storm into Canada’s Capital City for the 2017 Ottawa International Triathlon. The action-packed triathlon festival will feature seven races from the grassroots to elite level, including the National Championships, the Canadian Paratriathlon Championships and CAMTRI Sprint Premium American Cup, June 17-18.

“The 2017 Ottawa International Triathlon has something for everyone who enjoys the thrill of triathlon – whether you’re a participant, a spectator, or a volunteer,” said OIT Race Director Sharon Donnelly. “This unique, world-class event offers competitors the opportunity to swim, bike and run in the heart of Canada’s Capital, alongside the historic Rideau Canal. It will be a safe, fun and action-packed weekend for all.”

An exciting new race format will headline Triathlon Canada’s inaugural National Championships for junior, under-23 and elite athletes hitting the start line for the CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon Premium American Cup that will take place on spectacular stage beginning on the shores of Dows Lake, and then takes athletes on a bike and run course alongside Ottawa’s famous and picturesque landmarks.

Modeled after the highly successful race format used at the Tiszaujvaros World Cup in Hungary, the Ottawa International Triathlon will open up with super-sprint distance qualifying heats (300m swim; 8km bike; 1.5km run) on June 17, and will crown its winners the following day with the sprint distance finals that will feature a 750m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run. The top finishers in each heat automatically advance to the A Final. The remainder of the A Final start list is decided by fastest overall qualifying times. Athletes not qualifying for the A Final will race in a B Final.

The weekend will also feature five other events for athletes of all ages and abilities, from Kids of Steel to junior to sprint and Olympic-distance Age Group championships.

“This is the first time ever that our sport will hold its National Championships for athletes at all levels in one triathlon festival, and I can’t think of anywhere better to do this in Canada’s 150th birthday year than in the heart of Ottawa,” said Kim Van Bruggen, Chief Executive Officer, Triathlon Canada.

It will also be the first time that Triathlon Canada brings each of its National Team triathletes to a Canadian Championship race.

“Giving our next generation of triathletes the opportunity to compete against, and meet, our elite high-performance athletes is nothing short of inspiring and critical to the growth and future success of our sport across Canada,” added Van Bruggen.

The Ottawa International Triathlon is an International Triathlon Union sanctioned event and is being held in partnership with the City of Ottawa, Ottawa Riverkeeper, Triathlon Canada and Triathlon Ontario.
