VICTORIA—Canada’s top triathletes in all race categories will be swimming, biking and running in eight provinces across Canada this summer as Triathlon Canada rolls out its 2017 Domestic Event Schedule on Wednesday.
In recognition of Canada’s 150th birthday, the high-performance and age group racing calendar kicks into high gear, with the Canadian Triathlon Championships being held in Ottawa, June 17-18.
Canada will then, for the first time ever, welcome the world’s best triathletes for two World Triathlon Series races in one year. The world-renowned ITU World Triathlon Edmonton will be held July 28-29 before charging down the Trans Canada Highway for the inaugural Montreal International Triathlon, August 5-6.
The triathlon world’s attention will shift back to Canada, August 18-27, when the 2017 ITU Multisport World Championships will be staged in Penticton, B.C. for the first time ever.
“This summer promises to be one of the most exciting event lineups in the history of triathlon in Canada with thousands of triathletes testing their limits across the country,” said Kim Van Bruggen, Chief Executive Officer, Triathlon Canada. “Hosting major events for athletes in all corners of Canada is critical to the continued growth of our sport. Over the last few years, Triathlon Canada along with our partners, have been focused on extending our international event hosting opportunities into Eastern Canada – a region that is extremely passionate for all Olympic and Paralympic sports.
“I can think of no better place to stage our national championships than in Ottawa while celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, and I know both Edmonton and Montreal are going to put on another great show for the world’s best triathletes. Hosting major events at the highest level of competition provides home field advantage for our high performance athletes, and additional international race opportunities for our next generation of rising stars.”
Showcasing the sport for all athletes at all levels, including each of the marquee events on the 2017 campaign, will have highly sought after age group qualification spots up for grabs to represent Canada at the 2018 Gold Coast ITU Standard and Sprint Triathlon World Championships, and the 2018 Odense ITU Multisport World Championships in Denmark. All events on the Triathlon Canada Multisport Series are age group qualification races for Denmark. Complete event and qualification details are highlighted in the domestic race calendar below, or at www.triathloncanada.com.
Triathlon Canada has also added two new events in 2017: Canadian Club Championships and the Canadian University Individual Championships, which will be held in connection with the Canadian Triathlon Championships in Ottawa.
