TABOR, Cze—Canada’s Mathis Beaulieu is having quite a run in July.
One week removed from winning his first major international triathlon race on one of the greatest stages in the sport in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary, the 18-year-old pulled away from the field in Tabor, Czech Republic on Sunday to win his second-straight race on the Europe Triathlon Junior Cup.
The lone Canadian to toe the line in the 70-man field, Beaulieu clocked a golden time of 58:26 in the sprint distance race.
“This feels absolutely awesome,” said Beaulieu. “I’m so thankful for this opportunity to race in Europe and happy with my performances.”
Italy’s Davide Menichelli was the next best finisher at 58:37. Australia’s Toby Powers locked up the bronze medal with a time of 58:57.
Beaulieu, who won the Canadian Championships two weeks ago, battled from start-to-finish in the challenging test. The Quebecer persevered through the difficult 750-metre swim where he came out of the water 14th before heading onto the grueling 20-kilometre bike where he worked his way in the pack to stay in contention for the foot race for the medals.
“The bike was so brutal with all of the hills and technical section. At first, I didn’t feel very good, but I kept my pace and managed to get the win,” beamed the rising talent. “My coach has done a really good job this year with my run. This work is what I attribute my success to this season.”
Beaulieu will now return to Canada where he will enjoy a week off before heading to Niagara Falls to represent Team Quebec at the 2022 Canada Summer Games, August 5.
