As Triathlon Canada’s coaching program coordinator, Lucy Smith is leading the revision of the organization’s National Coaching Certification Program for both community and competitive pathways. The program, which will be rolled out across the country while working in partnership with provincial sport organizations, is designed to minimize any risks associated with coaching in triathlon. It will also help ensure a safe training and competitive environment for athletes, volunteers, parents and all involved.
Lucy is an education major who has deep roots in Canada’s triathlon community as an athlete, coach and administrator over the last three decades. A lifelong multi-sport athlete who has racked up 19 Canadian Championship titles, along with multiple World Championship medals in the sports of cross-country running, track and field, long distance triathlon and duathlon, Lucy understands the coaching landscape given her certification as an NCCP coach since 1984, along with her background as a lead coach with Times Colonist 10K Victoria and LifeSport Coaching where she delivered high-quality coaching to kids and adults from the grassroots to high-performance level around the world.
Be it our growing community of high-performance athletes (competitive), or our passionate age groupers (community), Lucy is committed to ensuring all of these athletes have access to the great coaches they deserve, along with a safe environment to train and compete.
