As soon as he tried sport, Charles was competitive. He tried many summer and winter sports such as soccer, alpine skiing, and judo.

When he was nine years old, he started swimming with the local club, Les Cachalots. During that time, Charles received his first road bike to take part in the Port-Cartier triathlon. Road cycling would become a true passion and that’s when racing on the provincial circuit started. Being the lone member of his club, he stood out right away in his first races. Funny fact, he found there wasn’t much strategy to the sport of triathlon at that time.

He really became serious about triathlon during the summer of 2010, after failing to make the selection for the regional soccer team. Charles shifted towards triathlon with the objective to participate in the Jeux du Québec. During the next four years, Charles trained with Christian Lepage along with three of his swimming buddies. The diversity and the fun they were having during training made the group successful: cross-country, snowshoeing races, cross-country skiing, obstacle course, strength training were all elements of the Lepage team plan and the energy was palpable.

During the summer of 2014, Charles was selected to take part in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, where he raced to a respectable ninth place. Since 2015, he has been training with Laval University’s Rouge & Or. International training camps have been part of his routine while he still works hard to get good grades. His progression has been steady, and he successfully took part in national and international competitions and even won second place at the 2016 Junior World Championships. In the spring of 2017, Sports-Québec awarded Charles Charles with an outstanding male athlete on the Canadian scene, all sports combined.

Charles is one of Canada’s top triathletes. In addition to being a part of Canada’s silver-medal winning mixed relay team at the 2019 Pan American Games, Charlies racked up five podiums on the CAMTRI circuit that year, including his first victory on home turf in Montreal. He had a career best World Triathlon Championship Series finish on home turf in 2023 where he was seventh in Montreal. He also had a sixth place finish and won a bronze medal on the World Triathlon Cup last year.

Salmon fishing and hunting are his favourite family activities. Charles particularly likes his hometown, Port-Cartier, where he is surrounded by the sea and rivers. Charles completed his Natural Sciences studies in the fall of 2017.
